OMNITROL WIP Appliance Selected for Research, Education, and Training

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA. (December 13, 2007) -- Omnitrol Networks announced today that the Manufacturing Systems and Automation Laboratory of the University of Texas at San Antonio is developing a test-bed for automatic identification (Auto-ID) applications in manufacturing based on the OMNITROL WIP appliance.

The new OMNITROL-based network will provide an advanced manufacturing intelligence development and deployment environment for the Manufacturing Systems and Automation Laboratory (MSA) at San Antonio. MSA is one of three new laboratories established as a part of the UTSA's new initiative "Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Systems (CAMLS)". The CAMLS has recently been awarded a $500,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Defense and a $375,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to build and support new research laboratories in manufacturing engineering. "These grants allow us to quickly acquire and deploy effective blends of equipment and software packages to establish in-house capabilities in order to support research, research training, and education in manufacturing system integration, automation, lean manufacturing, value chain modeling, and simulation," said Can Saygin, Director of the MSA and associate professor of mechanical engineering at UTSA.

"I was extremely impressed with the capabilities of the OMNITROL appliance approach, and its ability to rapidly create and deploy intelligent edge manufacturing services, which led me to select Omnitrol Networks' solution for my laboratory. The new OMNITROL-based network gives us more flexibility than today's approach, making our research more timely and applicable," said Can Saygin. "In addition, the OMNITROL's capability to integrate with all devices on the shop floor, including PLCs and new sensor technologies like RFID, is giving our students and industry partners access to the latest leading edge technologies."

The solution environment is based on OMNITROL's unique Edge Application Services Engine (EASE™) and device adaptation that provide a very powerful workflow services development and deployment environment. The workflow services are created using a powerful BPEL-like Service Definition Language, called Edgelets™. The language was developed to enable rapid and easy modeling of business processes and deliver industrial automation, WIP tracking, asset tracking and shipping accuracy applications. The complete solution is packaged into a single appliance model dramatically reducing the costs and complexity of development and deployment.

"Omnitrol Networks is very pleased to collaborate with a leading manufacturing laboratory such as UTSA's to develop coursework and university programs that apply to the Department of Defense projects and provide academic leadership in the sensor infrastructure. The laboratory is a great partner to develop initiatives with San Antonio's rich manufacturing environment," said Raj Saksena, CEO of Omnitrol Networks. "Our OMNITROL platform has proven itself as the easiest, most flexible and cost-effective solution to develop and deploy real-time operational intelligence for discrete and process manufacturing."
