RFID investment is at a record level

For Immediate Release
20th August 2008
RFID investment is at a record level
IDTechEx, Cambridge, UK

The global market for Radio Frequency Identification RFID is quintupling to $27 billion dollars in the next ten years, with some companies enjoying orders of $0.5 billion already. Not surprisingly, investment in RFID suppliers is running at a record level as are acquisitions of such companies. Exits are easy to find.

At the major IDTechEx conference “RFID Europe”, there will a one day investment summit. This is the key European event supporting this activity. Interest in the summit is at such a high level that it is proving difficult to fit everyone in. The latest addition to the line-up of companies seeking investment is DecaWave, a fabless RFID chip producer in Ireland, France and the USA that is preparing a chip that is claimed to remove the few disadvantages of Ultra Wide Band UWB. UWB is often the basis of the top performing Real Time Locating Systems RTLS. RTLS is a newly popular form of RFID. The limitations of UWB RTLS that are tackled by the DecaWave approach include limited range and tag density and inability of tags to talk to tags, claims the company.

Taking place on 29 September, the investment summit has panels on the hottest aspects of RFID today - software and networks, chips and components and real time locating systems. There is an experts panel and, of course, an RFID investors panel.

This summit brings together leading pure-play RFID companies that are gaining traction and substantial revenues today, as well as hidden gems with enormous potential. Some seek Series A funding and some seek Series B. Attendees will also have access to industry thought-leaders, valuable quantitative and qualitative research, and one-on-one meetings with RFID CEOs because, in addition to the networking intervals, breakout sessions are facilitated at the end of the day.

Exciting companies raising funds include Cypak of Sweden, Datamars and Bibliotheca of Switzerland, Lyngsoe Systems of Denmark, Ekahau and Confidex of Finland, AeroScout and Impinj of the USA and Ubisense and Cambridge Resonant Technologies of the UK. That takes us from chips to finished products. The experts include Cisco, Avery Dennison and Optimal Ventures and the investors in command include Logispring, Xange, RFID Invest and Quan Ventures which hosts the event in the form of successful RFID investor Ed Schneider.
